Anne Forbes Farquharson (Anne) of Ottawa, passed away June 2, 2020 due to complications from COVID.
Born July 21st, 1936, Anne was predeceased by her parents, Hector Alexander Gibb and Jessie Mitchell Whitton Gibb (m. Forbes) of Dundee, Scotland, and beloved brother Hector Alexander Gibb (1942-2014), and her grandson, who left us far too early, Taggart James Hollingsworth Farquharson (July 28, 1999-May 27, 2000), and is survived by her sister Avril Hayter of Monifieth, Scotland.
Anne attended the Morgan Academy on Forfar Road, Dundee across the street from the Maryfield Dairy, the family business and home. Anne often spoke of her childhood memories of working at the Dairy delivering milk to neighbours and collecting the accounts. Her fondest memories were of family picnics in the Scottish countryside. Later she was an avid attendee at dances at a strictly no-alcohol dance hall in Broughty Ferry on Firth of Tay, just outside Dundee. She recently told an anecdote about speaking with an older cousin, who was surprised to see her out for an evening at the age of 16. She was apprenticing as a hairdresser when she met James her future husband at one of those dances.
In 1955, at the age of 19, Anne departed from Liverpool for the first of many trans-Atlantic voyages, arriving in Montreal to marry the dancing partner who had become the love of her life, James Orchison Lyell Farquharson (1933-2009 ), who had emigrated to Canada the year before. She traveled to Windsor to live with her sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson, prior to the wedding. After getting married Anne and Jim moved to Ottawa where she would devote her passion and energy for life to raising their four boys.
Anne often talked of how she enjoyed the social life in Ottawa with many evenings spent in the '50s and '60s dancing to the likes of Paul Anka at the Chateau Laurier. The boys could always expect to find candies waiting for them the morning after their parents were out at a dance. Once when they were all quite young, she told them about dancing with Pierre Trudeau at the Ottawa Press Club the night before. They were too young to know whether to believe her or not, but she never denied it in later years. As an avid golfer for over 30 years Anne enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club.
After her marriage of twenty-two years ended, Anne went back to work as a hair stylist, but first needed to recertify, which she did by attending Bruno's School of Hair Design in Toronto. For this she stayed with her nephew Frank Anderson and his family in Burlington, commuting into Toronto for very long days. Her boys always marvelled at their mom starting her career over at that point in her life.
After a few years of working in the hair salon at The Bay in Ottawa, Anne, being independent and from an entrepreneurial family, decided that what she really wanted to be was self-employed. She started out on this career by learning the sales business, working the Ottawa Valley as a book sales representative followed by other sales rep positions. The business that she most enjoyed was wholesaling jewelry to stores throughout Eastern Ontario. Anne often talked fondly of the entrepreneurs who ran the stores as customers and friends having worked with many of them for over twenty years.
Anne visited Scotland many times over the years showing her boys her love of the country and often playing golf at the Monifieth Golf Club with her father Hector (1910-2000).
